Are you going away on vacation this summer? It’s great to get away and relax but how awful would it be to arrive home from your relaxing vacation to find your precious valuables have been stolen by a burglar? Unfortunately, this does happen. So, let’s look at some things you can do to keep some of your smaller, valuable items safe?
While there are many technological ways to secure your precious items these days, let’s consider a few, not so high-tech ways to effectively keep your valuables safe at home while you are away. It’s good to think about the fact that burglars don’t want to spend much time sifting through a homeowner’s belongings, they want to be in and out as quickly as possible, so they usually choose easy access areas to look for valuables.
While you might think a wall safe is the best option, remember, it’s not that hard to cut around it and take the entire thing. A better choice is a floor safe which is much harder to remove.
A good place to hide smaller valuables is a hollowed-out book. If you have a decent number of books on your book shelf, an intruder will not want to take time looking through them all on the off chance you’ve placed some valuables in them.
Place valuables under a plastic garbage bag in a kitchen or bathroom trash can. Not even burglars will want to go looking through your garbage. You could also put them underneath a house plant pot. It’s a good idea, though, to store these precious items in a waterproof vessel.
Do you have many boxes or containers stored in your garage? A good place to conceal valuables is in boxes that look like they’re never used, containers labelled “old school supplies” or “children’s clothing” for example, will not be very interesting to an intruder.
These are just a few ideas to help protect your smaller valuables, but obviously, they are not going to help with the larger items. It is very difficult to ensure everything will stay protected while you are away, so a wise option is to obtain homeowners or renters insurance so that you are covered for these types of unfortunate events.
