It seems like more and more people nowadays are suffering with allergies or some kind of respiratory ailment. Although we can’t completely eliminate the causes of this, what are some simple ways we can improve the quality of air we breathe inside our homes?
This may seem like a very obvious thing to suggest but, keeping our homes as clean as possible will do a lot to improve indoor air quality. If you have pets in the house, you may need to vacuum and dust more often, especially in the areas your pets spend most of the time. Choose non-chemical cleaning products as these will contribute towards a healthier indoor environment. If, however, there are chemical products you prefer, can you switch to a non-aerosol version?
If we have purchased new furniture or soft furnishings, try to give them a good airing. Many new furniture items contain the chemical formaldehyde which can produce toxic gas and release it into the home. All rooms benefit from good air flow, so try to air them out as often as you can.
Periodically have a check of the house to look for mold. Mold in a house can have a very adverse effect on the health of its occupants.
If there are smokers in the house, make sure they smoke outside. Tobacco smoke contains many health damaging chemicals so try to avoid these inside the home.
Regularly check appliances for carbon monoxide. This can be a problem with certain heaters and stoves etc.
Replace air conditioning filters on a regular basis, especially if they are in constant use.
As we can see, there are some easy ways to lessen our homes air pollutants.
