While it’s natural and encouraged to be concerned for your safety and the safety of your family, it may be less obvious that a property owner should be concerned for the safety of their tenants. The fact is that we live in a dangerous world, and while your tenants bear personal responsibility for their safety, you bear responsibility for the safety of the home they live in.

It’s important to regularly inspect your rental property – at the very least, inspect the outside. Are there objects like trash cans or lawn care equipment blocking walkways or stairways? Is there any uneven concrete or exposed roots that could cause a trip or fall? What about security? Is there adequate, functioning exterior lighting? Do the door and window locks work properly? Is it possible to post lawn signs or window decals to indicate that there is a security system on the premises?
