A more accurate way to do it is to use a moisture meter. These are easy to use and effective. They are also not too expensive – the average home owner one only costing about $50 or so.

The very basic, and easy way to do it – with a pencil. Very carefully draw around the wet spot and wait. After a few weeks/few months if the stain goes beyond those drawn lines then you know it is bigger than before  – hence and active point of moisture.
