Sinkholes are known for the huge amounts of destruction they can cause, not only to roads and property but also to human life.  If you are worried about the possibility of sinkholes forming near your home, what are some of the warning signs you should watch out for?  Let’s consider a few things that would indicate a sinkhole might be forming.

There are many signs to watch out for, some are subtler than others.  Among the more subtle things you might notice are changes in your landscape.  For example, you could observe that water has started to form pools in areas that have never done so before.  Plants might be dying off for no apparent reason.  This can happen because a sinkhole will drain away the plants water source.  Fence posts or trees could be starting to lean over or parts of them that are normally underground might start becoming exposed.  What of the more obvious signs?  Rapid ground subsidence and openings in the ground are some more obvious indicators.  You might also observe cracks forming in circular patterns in the ground.

What about inside the home?  What sinkhole indicators might you notice? Look for cracks that have started to form in walls and floors.  Are your windows and doors no longer closing properly?  Well water could start to look muddy or cloudy.

These are a few of the possible indicators that a sinkhole is forming near you.  Keep in mind, though, that some of these signs could also be indicators of a completely different issue with your home so its important that, if you notice any of these things, have them inspected to find out the real source of the problem.
