Sadly, with so many devastating natural disasters occurring more and more frequently its important to be prepared for all outcomes.  If you live in an area where flooding might occur, what should you know about returning to a home that has been flooded?  Here are a few things to consider:

We all know how much damage flood waters can cause which means that returning to a flood damaged home requires the need for extra caution.  An important thing to do is to make sure gas and electric is turned off.  While its likely that there is no power in the area, its still wise to check it is turned off in your home.  However, if you must stand in water in order to access the circuit breaker in your home, then it is best to leave it alone until you have asked the advice of a professional.  Do not put yourself at unnecessary risk.

Wear proper protective clothing including a breathing mask and sturdy footwear.  Flood water leaves behind all sorts of debris and muck and the water itself will contain dangerous bacteria from sewage etc.  Keep this in mind when going through flood damaged items.  Although you may want to keep some items, others are best to throw away.  Things like mattresses are probably best to get rid of and be careful with any food or drink items if you are not sure whether they were in contact with flood water.

Even if the home doesn’t look like it has been damaged structurally, it may still be unsafe.  Use extra caution when entering and first look for signs that a ceiling or floor may collapse.

It is hoped that no one will have to deal with a stressful situation like a disaster in their area but its important to be prepared ahead of time so that you will know what action to take.
