The vast majority of us have had to move house at one time or another, so we are all too aware of what a stressful process it can be. Even if we think we have done all the needed preparation, when it comes to moving day we often end up throwing everything we can into boxes, or even throwing a lot of stuff in the garbage. In this type of stressful environment, its not normally the time that we are being very conscious of the environment. So then, how do we prepare to move while at the same time do all we can to not negatively impact the environment?
Sorting out our things far in advance of the move is a key step to successful moving.
The less we have, the less we will need to move when we have to. Ask yourself if you really need an item before you buy it.
Periodically go through the things you no longer use. This is the best time to figure out what to do with them, not on a stressful moving day.
RECYCLE. Try to recycle all your unwanted items. Sort things out that you no longer use. Separate them into piles for recycling, maybe one for donating and one for a yard sale.
We have many environmental hazards in our homes and garages. We might be tempted to just throw these in the garbage when it comes to moving day, but this has a very negative impact on our environment. Take the time beforehand to dispose of these hazards in a responsible manner. Some examples of these are light bulbs, unwanted electronics, chemicals, paint cans, batteries etc. Call your local environmental agency who can tell you the correct way to dispose of them.
We know that moving can be a terribly stressful experience, but simplifying in advance will help alleviate some of the stresses. Even if you are not planning to move in the foreseeable future, you may find that by putting some of these suggestions into practice, your life can feel a lot more organized.
