A move to a new house is often a very stressful time, it’s no surprise, then, if our normal environmentally conscious way of life is not a priority during this period. So, what are some steps we can take ahead of time that will, not only reduce the amount of stress we experience on moving day, but also help us do so with little impact environmentally?

If we live in a home for long enough it’s very easy to accumulate all sorts of items we don’t need so how can these be recycled instead of just thrown away? Take some time each day to sort through some of your belongings. Why not put them in different piles? One pile could be for items you wish to keep and take with you to the new house, another pile could be for a yard sale and yet another could be for items you want to donate. This will not only help you to recycle unwanted items, but it will help you simplify, making the unpacking process a lot easier.

What about those items we use every day that, if thrown into the garbage, will be an environmental hazard? Items such as used batteries, old paint cans, chemicals, electronic equipment, and used light bulbs need to be disposed of properly. If you do not know where to take items like these you could always contact your local environmental agency who can help you. If these items are sorted out well ahead of moving day, it will be much easier to dispose of them in the right way.

Simplifying and planning ahead are some key steps to a stress-free and environmentally conscious move.
