While a power outage is extremely frustrating, for many, it is much more. Not only can it become costly to lose power for an extended period of time, but it can also become a more serious matter of health and safety. Is it wise, then, to invest in a portable generator? Here are a few of the advantages as well as possible disadvantages:
There are numerous benefits to owning a portable generator. They are relatively easy to use and do not require any type of permit to handle one. They usually run on gasoline which is easy to come by and they are small enough to transport easily, which is particularly good for camping or more remote areas.
Before you decide to purchase a portable generator, however, there are some things you should have in mind. Portable generators are intended for corded appliances and not for appliances hard wired to your home. You should never overload this type of generator as it will stop it from working correctly and could become a fire hazard. Never have a portable generator running in the home, it generates carbon monoxide which we know can be deadly. Be careful to keep it away from water to avoid risk of electric shock and also be very careful with gasoline when the generator is hot. This, again, presents a fire risk.
After this very brief summary we can see there are many benefits to owning a portable generator, but a great deal of care should be taken when operating one to prevent accident or injury.
