They usually run on gasoline which is easy to come by and they are small enough to transport easily, which is particularly good for camping or more remote areas.
Before you decide to purchase a portable generator, however, there are some things you should have in mind. Portable generators are intended for corded appliances and not for appliances hard wired to your home. You should never overload this type of generator as it will stop it from working correctly and could become a fire hazard. Never have a portable generator running in the home, it generates carbon monoxide which we know can be deadly. Be careful to keep it away from water to avoid risk of electric shock and also be very careful with gasoline when the generator is hot. This, again, presents a fire risk.
