Moisture intrusion can become a real problem in a home, causing bad indoor air quality and expensive repair bills. It could even reduce the value of the home. Identifying the areas where damage from water is most likely to be found is a good first step to preventing bigger issues.

The roof is an area that is very vulnerable to moisture intrusion. If the roof does not have enough slope to allow for adequate drainage, this can cause damage. If the flashings of the roof are leaking, this can also create problems so they should be checked periodically. Gutters and downspouts which are designed to drain water away from the building can easily become blocked which is another way that water can cause problems for the home. Have these cleaned out regularly and check that downspouts are positioned in a way that prevents water pooling around the foundations.

Seal up holes and cracks. With time, holes and cracks will form in the foundations and walls of the home. This makes them susceptible to water intrusion. The plumbing system is another high-risk area for moisture issues. Immediately fix dripping pipes, blocked drains, or any leaks you find. Even a small constant drip can cause big problems over time.

Another big cause of moisture damage is high levels of indoor humidity. Some of the indicators that this is becoming a problem are stains appearing on walls and ceilings, musty odors, and bad air quality. Cleaning and drying surfaces where you see moisture collecting will help prevent this. A dehumidifier will also help.
