There are such a variety of methods to get rid of insects and pests available, but we are going to consider just one in this blog, bug zappers.  A bug zapper works by enticing a flying insect to a fluorescent light.  As the insect approaches the light, it is caught (or zapped) by electrified wire mesh that surrounds the light.  While this might appear to be very effective, how good are they really?

Its easy to see that a bug zapper will very effectively kill anything that wonders into the electrified wire mesh, and while this may be something you want to happen, it is also the problem.  What do we mean?  Well, the main reason most people want to kill insects is because they bite, mosquitoes are a good example of this.  But the problem with mosquitoes is that they are more attracted to humans and animals than to light, so they are just as likely to bite you whether you have a bug zapper or not.

Also, the fact that bug zappers will kill any flying insect that wonders into its path means that they are also killing insects that are greatly needed for the environment such as bees.

Another factor is human safety.  As strange as it may seem, when a bug is zapped, tiny fragments of it are blasted into the air which can travel upwards of 7 feet.  These fragments contain various bacteria found in the insect which, if breathed in, could be harmful.  Imagine this if a bug zapper is situated over a food preparation area?

Yes, bug zappers are an effective method for getting rid of flying insects but take time to think about where to place one as well as the possible effects it could have on much insects that are much needed.
