If you are someone nearing retirement, it is wise from time to time to start planning for when you may not be able to be quite as active as you are now. Although it is not necessarily the time to worry about this, planning ahead for it is a sensible option. What are some things you should start thinking about?
We are all aware that living a lifestyle that is as healthy and active as possible is a key to staying young, but we wanted to list a few other suggestions to keep in mind when planning for retirement.
Its important to keep family members aware of any future plans you have. Have a meeting with them to discuss what you want. In this way, they can make the right decisions for you if the need arises, based on your desires and requirements. An example of what to discuss with them would be whether you will always want to keep living in the house you are in now, or if you would consider moving to a smaller easier to maintain home.
As we know all too well, homes require constant maintenance. Look through your finances and retirement plans. This might be a good time to think about having a separate savings account specifically for the maintenance of the home.
How is your budget now? Could this be the right time to start some of the homes bigger projects you have been thinking about doing? Perhaps you have been considering renovating certain areas of the home. Now would also be a good time to have the home checked to see if there are any areas, such as the roof or heating system, that may need replacing or fixing in the future. By preparing for this now, you will prevent any unwanted surprise expenses at a time when it may be harder for you to do something about it.
