Do you seem to have too much moisture in your bathroom?  Or does it linger for a long time?  The reason could be that your bathroom fan is not working as well as it should.  Even if it makes a sound indicating it’s turned on, doesn’t always mean its functioning properly.

Most bathrooms are fitted with some type of extraction fan, usually in the ceiling, to prevent the bathroom from being excessively humid, the fan is connected to a duct system that should be vented to the outside of the home.  At times though, as we’ve already mentioned, the fan does not work effectively, so what are some possible causes for this?

A simple issue could be that the fan has become clogged with dirt and dust, meaning that it can’t extract properly.  This simple problem requires a simple fix, give it a good cleaning to unclog it, then, regularly check it to make sure it remains unclogged.

Another, bigger, problem that sometimes occurs with extraction fans is that the duct work has not been adequately installed and so does not reach to the exterior of the house.  It might only reach in to the attic space.  Is this really that bad?  Well, while you might not see too much difference in your bathroom, you will eventually see problems in the attic space.  Excessive moisture could damage attic materials and even cause mold to develop.

A few signs you may want to look out for to determine if the fan is not working correctly are: corrosion of bathroom fixtures, excessive moisture on walls and ceilings, you might even notice bubbling or peeling of paint.  If you have noticed some of these things and are concerned, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to advise you.
