In sticking with our aluminum wiring theme, I wantd to talk about two ways to “correct” aluminum wiring in your home.

If any home contains aluminum wiring, it should be assessed by a qualified electrician who has experience in this niche. Unfortunately, not all licensed electricians have the ability to complete this task so it might take some research to find someone to help. From the CPSC, we have two solutions for correcting this issue;

  • Firstly, ‘copalum’ crimps can be used to attach copper wire to the aluminum wire already in place. Using a specific metal sleeve and crimping tool, the correction can take place. After this, the repair is completed with the crimp connector being covered in an insulating sleeve. Perhaps the most practical solution, it is favored by many but proves costly.
  • Secondly, this is the most efficient solution but often impractical and it involves rewiring the whole house and replacing it all with copper.
